Student Policies and Expectations

Earth Studies aims to facilitate a learning environment that promotes individual growth and knowledge sharing. We expect each community member to work toward a safe, inclusive, respectful environment and engage fully.

By agreeing to participate in our programs, you are agreeing to create and maintain the following:

  • An inclusive community learning environment free from discrimination and verbal or physical harassment.

  • A supportive space for exploring personal interests and physical abilities centred on environmental education and community leadership.

  • A clean and high-functioning campus homestead.

  • A substance-free space for learning; alcohol or recreational drug use is strictly prohibited on campus.

We expect each participant to show up putting their “best foot forward.” Our daily lifestyle requires that all fully engage in routine. The routine will have you:

  • Engage in doing daily chores and learning activities.

  • Contribute to group discussions and give feedback.

  • Show up on time for all group activities, including meals, chores, meetings, etc.

  • Refrain from actions or language that may be harmful or judgmental towards others.

  • Communicate with the group or facilitators when you have trouble looking after yourself emotionally or physically.

  • Dial in by unplugging the smartphone. Our program and location allow you to immerse yourself fully in the present. The campus has limited Wi-Fi and cell service. Our goal is to connect you to our lifestyle and working homestead. Use of technology outside certain program activities or designated downtime will be limited.

  • Adopt a proactive approach. Meaning that you “give more than you take.” You are expected to contribute your passion, vision, and drive to the Earth Studies community.

  • Abstain from using alcohol and recreational drugs while on campus. Developing healthy relationships between participants, facilitators, and animals requires our complete and unaltered presence of mind.

What Alumni Are Saying

“Earth Studies is an incredible and unique place that will teach you things you've never imagined that you'd be able to learn, it will challenge you to develop, give you wonderful memories, and inspire you to grow.”

— Nora Holmes

“We were on our way up to the top of a 10,000 foot summit in Waterton, Alberta […] I felt like an explorer hired by National Geographic. It's Amazing what mother nature can hide from you. All it takes to find it is a little curiosity.”

— Samuel Erdman

“No matter whether I was cleaning kennels or mucking the stables, I had a purpose. Everything I did was valued, and everything I did was fun.”

— Haley Brumberger

“The feeling I most remember is the crisp air on my face […] on the back of the sled, whipping around corners and up and down hills.”

— Jack Elliott-Higgins
